At Sheway healing begins with belonging

Sheway provides health and social supports for pregnant people, parents and young children in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. Rooted in the understanding that wellness is shaped by the conditions of people’s lives, Sheway offers a culturally grounded model of care that meets clients where they are.

From the moment someone enters, culture is visible, welcomed and honoured. Indigenous artwork by Tsleil-Waututh artist Olivia George greet clients with a territory acknowledgement, while a children’s sensory wall offers a playful, culturally meaningful space for families to gather.

Smudging, cedar brushing and access to traditional medicines are available to anyone who wishes to use them. These practices help reconnect clients with identity, ceremony and land, and complement the care offered onsite.

Cultural programming at Sheway includes beading, drum and rattle making, Métis finger weaving, ribbon skirt workshops and storytelling. Elders lead much of this work, sharing teachings and support in a warm, peaceful environment.

For many clients, especially those who may not have had opportunities to connect with their culture, these programs foster identity, belonging and healing. Cultural connection often encourages more regular clinic visits, stronger engagement and improved access to essential supports such as prenatal care, housing assistance and counselling.

Sheway’s approach shows that culturally safe care is vital to improving health outcomes. By creating a space where Indigenous culture is celebrated and respected, we can help strengthen wellness, build confidence and nurture community, one visit, and one moment of healing, at a time.
