Opening doors to future careers in health care
Early career exploration plays an important role in supporting a strong future workforce. By welcoming students into care settings, we help lay the groundwork for interest, learning and possibility.
Across Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH), we are helping young people discover meaningful and rewarding careers in health care. Our staff and medical staff play a key role in this work, offering hands-on learning experiences that bring career exploration to life and help students imagine themselves in future health-care roles.
In spring 2025, Indigenous students in grades 10 to 12 took part in a spring break camp at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH). Developed in partnership with the Vancouver School Board and Aboriginal Community Career Employment Services (ACCESS), the camp introduced students to a wide range of health-care careers across clinical and support areas.
We also welcomed high school students to a four-day summer camp at VGH, as well as students from the Surrey School District for a three-day immersive experience with our nursing teams. Throughout these programs, students developed practical skills and gained first-hand understanding of the day-to-day work of health-care professionals.
These initiatives are part of our ongoing commitment to helping youth explore career pathways in health care. Throughout the year, students also participated in events such as Take Our Kids to Work Day and the Youth Health-Care Career Open House, where they met with health-care professionals, learned about post-secondary programs and discovered careers they may pursue in the future.
By opening our doors and sharing our knowledge, we are inspiring the next generation of health-care professionals, strengthening both our future workforce and the communities we serve.
